FireBoard on the town at Made in KC!
Last week, the FireBoard media team stopped by the Country Club Plaza location of Made in KC. We caught up with Made in KC Brand Manager, Mary Marty to find out what unique items they sell and what people are buying as gifts this year. She first explained to us what Made in KC is all about.
“Made in KC is all about cultivating creativity within the Kansas City community.”
Made in KC is celebrating their 10th Anniversary this year. They started in 2015 with about a dozen Kansas City based makers and creators. They have grown to over 11 locations around the KC Metro and work with over 200 makers today. Three of their premiere locations include the makers spaces, but also feature cafes and bars where one can get a bite to eat and a refreshing beverage. Made in KC takes their name literally! As Mary remarked:
“90 cents of every dollar spent with Made in KC goes back into the Kansas City community. This is super important for us to keep those dollars within Kansas City and not to those big box retailers.”
Some of their more popular items include Kansas City themed apparel. KC hats manufactured by local KC company, Sandlot (yes, named after the movie!) and Kansas City socks from local artist Carly Rae Studio. They even have merchandise from the hit Podcast, New Heights, featuring KC Chiefs player, Travis Kelce. Also popular at this time of the year are Kansas City made chocolates from Andre’s and Christopher Elbow of which Made in KC has plenty in stock!
Made in KC also has some unique items for a variety of gifts. They, of course, carry the FireBoard Spark! Kansas City produces some of the best BBQ in the world! So it made sense to join the Made in KC family when they reached out to us to bring the Spark into their stores. The Spark fits in nicely among the various rubs and sauces that Made in KC also stocks on their shelves.
A popular, yet unique item, is the Retired Plaza Lights Bulbs. These are authentic bulbs from the well known Plaza Christmas lights, that have been repurposed into Christmas Tree ornaments! Made in KC also offers many styles and scents of candles. Some of which are traditional, some of which honor our sports heroes and some that have quirky scent names.

When asked about her favorite part of the holiday season, Mary remarked:
“My favorite part about the Christmas season would be the nostalgia one. I’m a 90s kid, so anything Christmas lights just brings me back to those days before the iPhone.”
Mary finished by sharing how much she loves learning which products people connect with Christmas and Made in KC. She says it’s always fun to see the same customers come back for their Plaza Lights ornaments or Advent Beer Boxes.
Stay tuned and thanks for taking interest in the FireBoard story!
