FAQs

+
What do I need to order with my FireBoard?

The FireBoard (FBX11) and FireBoard 2 (FBX2) require the Drive Fan Cable in order to run a fan.

The FireBoard 2 Drive (FBX2D) and the FireBoard 2 Pro (FBX2K) do not require the cable: they allow a compatible fan to plug directly into the unit.

The FBX2, FBX2D, and FBX2K all come equipped with a weather resistant case. If you are considering the FBX11, then you may want to purchase the FireBoard Case. Please note that this case will not fit the any of the FireBoard 2 models.

+
When will my order ship? When will I receive my order?
Your order will ship the same day it’s placed if it’s before 2:00 pm CST. If after 2:00 pm, the order will ship the next business day. We do not ship on weekends or holidays. We send a shipping confirmation email to each customer.

If you live within the United States, your order will typically be delivered in 2-3 business days. If you live outside of the United States, your order can take anywhere from 1-6 weeks depending on your location and the customs process. We do have dealers outside of the United States which can make your delivery process quicker. Click here  to view our dealer locator page and find one near you.

On international orders, you may be responsible for customs. If you refuse shipment on an order, the shipping cost will not be refunded.

How hot can the FireBoard and probes get?

The thermistor probes and cables that come with the FireBoard are rated from 0°F to 572°F (-18° to 300°C). We also offer RTD versions of our probes that are rated from -58°F to 716°F (-50° to 380°C). Learn more about our probes here.

The FireBoard unit itself is rated to 140°F (60°C); according to our laboratory testing, we believe the device should withstand temperatures in excess of this rating. Despite those tests, certain components used within the FireBoard are only rated up to 140°F (60°C).

+
Can I use the FireBoard with my gas, propane, or charcoal grill?

Absolutely! The thermistor temperature probes are rated up to 572°F, which should be satisfactory for most cooks on a grill. Temperatures inside of some grills may exceed the probe ratings, especially over a direct flame, so please use caution as you approach those higher temperatures.

+
Can the FireBoard be used without cloud monitoring?
Yes, the FireBoard also works over Bluetooth (direct to phone). More information about Bluetooth Connectivity can be found on our Knowledge Base.
+
How long does the device take to charge? How long does the battery last?
The FireBoard should take between 4-6 hours to charge. The charging and power behavior of the FBX11 and FBX2 units is similar to a cell phone, where the device can be powered from USB and also recharge at the same time. The device will automatically turn on when it is plugged into USB Power.

The FireBoard’s Li-Ion rechargeable battery should last approximately 30 hours for FBX2 units and 24hours for the FBX11.

+
What type of Bluetooth connection does the FireBoard utilize?
The FireBoard utilizes a Bluetooth 4.0 (Bluetooth Low Energy) Profile to communicate between the mobile app and the FireBoard. With a BLE connection, the pairing process of entering a password is no longer needed. The mobile app will automatically scan and find FireBoard devices via BLE. If you run into issues with discovering devices, in the worst case, you can force close the app, turn your Bluetooth on/off (e.g. airplane mode) and try to connect again. More information about Bluetooth Connectivity can be found on our Knowledge Base.
+
Is the FireBoard weather resistant?
The FireBoard 2 series models (FBX2, FBX2D, FBX2K) are all weather resistant, but not waterproof. The technical definition of water resistant is that it is able to resist the penetration of water to a certain degree, but not entirely.

The FireBoard (FBX11) unit itself is not weather resistant; while it does perform well in many conditions, if you anticipate rain or heavy moisture we recommend the FireBoard Case.

+
Are the probes waterproof?

Yes. Our manufacturer for the probes confirms they are waterproof, and our testing supports this claim; however, we do not recommend submerging the probes for an extended period of time.

+
Do the ambient probes plug in the same way as the food probes?

Yes, the ambient probes have an identical plug (2.5mm audio plug) on the end, so you can mix and match ambient/food probes however you would like.

+
What are the dimensions of the temperature probes?

Standard Food probe (SF311):
length = 5” straight section + 90° bend
collar diameter = 7/16″ (10.5mm)
diameter (probe itself) = 1/8” (4mm)

Standard Non-Threaded Ambient probe (SANT311):
length = 2 1/4”
diameter (probe itself) = 1/8” (4mm)
diameter including strain relief = 1/4″ (6mm)

Threaded Ambient probe (SA311):
length = 2 1/4”
diameter (probe itself) = 1/8” (4mm)
threading = 1/4” BSP fitting (note the threaded section is 1/2” in true diameter)
(matching hex nuts for 1/4″ BSP fitting are available here)

Smoker Ambient Probe (SS311):
(this fits standard Dial / Gauge thermometers such as this Tel-Tru)
length = 2 1/4”
diameter (probe itself) = 1/8” (4mm)
threading = 1/2” NTP fitting (note the threaded section is approx 27/32″ in true diameter)

Note: all probe plugs are 5/16″ (7.5mm) in diameter at their widest section

+
How long are the probe cables?

They are 6′ in length. We also have probe extensions available, which add another 6′.
