Spark Firmware Update 1.2.2

Posted on May 4, 2022 by Jeff Nichols / 5 Comments

Refining the Spark

FireBoard is releasing the first major firmware update for the Spark since the release of their instant read thermometer late last year.  The changes add two very cool screen viewing options and optimizes the reaction time in Sync Mode. The firmware update is automatic, and is done quickly and quietly when the Spark is connected to your WiFi.  If you have a Spark, please make sure to get it connected to WiFi, connect to USB and turn it on so it can receive the update!

Enhancement in SyncMode transfer

So let’s dig into the improvements!  As you are probably aware, SyncMode gave those who use both a Spark and a FireBoard the ability to remotely monitor their temperatures by turning the Spark into WiFi connected auxiliary display.

To activate SyncMode on a Spark, select settings on the main menu and then a long button push on SyncMode.

The firmware update has implemented full realtime synchronization, so all temperature updates to the Spark should happen immediately.  This is fun to watch!

Multiple Channel view in SyncMode

The Spark in the new multi-channel view in SyncMode

And speaking of Sync Mode previous to the update, users of this feature were only able to view one channel at a time.  Now you can view up to six different probes, which is the maximum number of channels you can use with a FireBoard.

A quick look at how the Spark organizes up to six different channels in the revised SyncMode.

As usual, this feature is compatible across the FireBoard series.  So it will work on the base model, Drive and Pro models of the FireBoard.

Leave-in Probe Graph View

Spark’s New Graph View when using an external leave-in thermometer.

One feature that separates the Spark from other instant read, pen type thermometers is its port for a leave-in temperature probe.  This allows you to continuously measure temperatures. Handy for the oven roasting, smoking, or getting those thick cut pork chops grilled just right.   The firmware update now gives you a second view that shows a graph of your temperature’s progress. This is in addition to the preexisting full screen, large numeral view that you normally get when measuring with the onboard thermometer. Pushing the button will toggle between standard and graph views when a probe is connected.

Enhanced Power Saving

Power saving is important on the Spark.  Additional logic in how the Spark switches between normal and sleep mode has been implemented in this firmware update.  This should result in dramatic improvements in battery life while using the external probe port.

OTA Updates – Get Your Spark Online!

Make sure to get your Spark connected!  At FireBoard, we frequently make firmware updates to improve our hardware.  This is a key part of our company, as we feel it’s important to continue supporting devices in the field and making them better.  Read more about our OTA process here.  To receive the latest Spark update, make sure your Spark is connected to your WiFi router and connected to USB power.  Then power it up and it will receive the update automatically.
